FOOD FIGHT!: THE LEGAL DEBATE OVER THE OBESITY EPIDEMIC, FOOD LABELING, AND THE GOVERNMENT’S INVOLVEMENT IN WHAT YOU EAT
Chapman University School of Law: Nexus Journal of Law and Policy
Orange, CA
November 4, 2011
Americans love to eat and who can blame them. In this melting pot culture, the availability and variety of food is sky high. This is fortunate because it seems people not only have less time but less desire to cook for themselves. Unfortunately, not all food is healthy and if we do not cook for ourselves it can be difficult to make smart choices. With concerns of obesity (especially among children), the federal government taking cues from state governments have put the health of our nation in the spotlight. The Chapman University School of Law Nexus Journal of Law and Policy is pleased to host a legal symposium on November 4, 2011 addressing the topic of the Government’s Involvement in What We Eat.
This symposium provides a great opportunity to explore and discuss the range of state and national issues that arise within the area of food regulation from political, economic, and pragmatic public policy perspectives. Food is a topic that spans all nationalities, social classes, and areas of the country alike. As a nation, where does the burden of staying healthy fall? Should some choices be beyond the public’s control? Is providing education on healthy eating habits and exercise enough to make a difference? At what point does government regulation cross the line? With the implementation of ObamaCare and a new presidential election just around the corner, these questions concerning the nation’s health will undoubtedly be a hotly debated issue. For this reason, the symposium topic and date were specifically selected to provide a preview of the arguments we will likely hear in the upcoming elections and the solutions our future leaders will likely implement once elected. This symposium provides an excellent opportunity to publish and speak about this compelling topic.
