Student Blog: Thoughts On The Law And The Legal Field

ARE WE MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION?

Recent news has shown that our economy is going in the right direction. While our economy has been taking a plunge for the worst since the Great Depression, it seems as though the overall percentage in jobs have steadily gone back up and our labor market has stabilized. We have gone a long way since last year, where it was reported that more than 750,000 jobs were lost within the first month of January. Along with the stabilization of our labor market, the housing market is slowly stabilizing as well. It might be too soon to speak- but the facts show that our unemployment rate is slowly decreasing, and our housing market is not going hay wire.

Is it because we’re seeing the tail end of a bad recession, are we doing something right, or is this just the calm before the storm?

While this sounds like optimistic news, it’s hard to really take any of these statistics seriously when so many are still at a loss for jobs and people are still frequently getting laid off or are in fear of losing their jobs. As a whole, we might be doing something right--but what has changed since last year?

I think that this has been a “totality of the circumstances effect” that has created this right path for our economy. While I do agree that President Obama has his work cut out for him, the American people suffered and took a stand as well.

People who used to spend money like the wind are being more responsible with their money--investing it and making better decisions. The job competition, while tough, is still thriving because people are still needed for jobs out there. The only difference is that there may be a tougher job screening to obtain these jobs. The American People are adapting to their situation--and still have the extra cash to lend a helping hand to others in need.

This past month Haiti has been struck with one of the most devastating natural catastrophes in the world, but still has managed to receive funds from the US, through the generous donations of its citizens who know that the money received will benefit the country in a grand way. Even with our current economic status, while people may groan and complain about our current state, the truth of the matter is--we are still lucky. We need to be smart. We need to work together. We need to make better decisions. I think that America will be able to get out of this hard time--it just won’t happen overnight.
